《Circulation Metaphor》
The <Metaphor of Circulation> exhibition presents media works by artists from Gwangju, who are currently active in Korea, in the UK under the theme of circulation and communication between nature and humans. Artists participating in this exhibition include Sanghwa Park, Sehee Park, Bongchae Son, Jeongrok Lee, Kihyeon Jeong, and Jeongju Jeong, selected by the Gwangju Museum of Art, as well as <Try Triangle> by Eul Park, Jeonghwan Kim, and Jeongsik Bae, which are the results of the residency program of the Asia Culture Center Creative Production Center. We plan to exhibit them together. Jeong Jeong-ju’s “Soswaewon” is a representative garden from the mid-Joseon Dynasty located in Damyang, Jeollanam-do, Korea, and deals with memory of space. Soswaewon, made of celadon ceramics located in a landscape including a valley, is a beautiful model of Namdo from the past and provides a space for a new sensory experience that communicates with present audiences.
<순환의 메타포>전에서는 자연과 인간 사이의 순환과 소통을 주제로 현재 한국에서 활발히 활동하고 있는 광주출신 작가들의 미디어 작품을 영국에 선보입니다. 이번 전시에 참여하는 작가들은 광주시립미술관 선정 작가인 박상화, 박세희, 손봉채, 이정록, 정기현, 정정주가 있으며 또한 아시아문화전당 창제작센터의 레지던시 프로그램 결과물인 박얼, 김정환, 배정식 작가의 <Try Triangle>을 함께 전시할 예정입니다. 정정주의 「소쇄원」은 한국 전남 담양에 위치한 조선 중기 시대의 대표적인 정원으로 공간에 대한 기억을 다룬다. 계곡을 포함한 풍경과 그 풍경 속에 위치한 청자기법의 도자로 제작된 소쇄원은 과거 속 재현된 남도의 아름다운 모형으로 현재의 관객과 소통하는 새로운 감각적 경험의 공간을 제공한다.

Soswaewon is a beautiful traditional garden built in the mid Joseon Dynasty. Two pavillion in a landscape with a valley and a waterfall act as eye in an idealized world according to the tradition of oriental painting. The landscape containing oriental ideals was reproduced in my work as a ceramic made with celadon technique, a symbol of oriental beauty. The video camera installed in the landscape made of ceramics captures the landscape and shows it to the audience in real time, just like the eyes of people located in the landscape. The slippery surfaces of the ceramic plates seen through the video cameras, showing strange contrasts such as excavated and restored artifacts sink deep in the ocean.
소쇄원은 조선중기 시대에 지어진 아름다운 전통정원이다. 계곡과 폭포가 있는 풍경속에 놓인 두개의 정자는 동양화의 전통에 따르면 이상화된 세계에 놓인 눈의 역할을 한다. 동양적 이상을 담은 풍경은 내 작품에서 마찬가지로 동양적 아름다움의 상징인 청자기법으로 제작된 도자로 재현되었다. 도자로 만들어진 풍경에 설치된 비디오카메라는 마치 그 풍경속에 위치한 사람들의 시선처럼 그 풍경을 찍어 실시간으로 관객들에게 보여준다. 카메라를 통해 보여지는 도자판들의 미끈거리는 표면은 바다 속 깊은 곳에 가라앉아 있다 발굴돼 복원된 유물과 같은 낯선 대조를 보여준다.
