《City of Gaze》

 

The network of gazes that are routinely gazed upon in modern cities visualizes the social relationships of the metropolis created by the seeing/being seen relationship. The virtual sense of space shown through model work of selected buildings in the Nagoya area, filming using small video cameras installed inside and outside the model, and real-time projection is an expression of the unfamiliar city of Nagoya and its people through the eyes of an artist visiting from Korea. And at the same time, it is a way of forming relationships with others through gaze.

Among the buildings that will disappear in the Hotei area, several were selected and made into models. These buildings are simple two- to three-story houses and commercial buildings with windows and balconies built after World War II. The building models are installed in groups on the floor of the exhibition hall, and multiple video cameras are installed inside and outside the models to capture the inside and outside of the model space, allowing the audience to view them through screens and monitors projected on the walls of the exhibition space. show it to.

The images of the secret and empty space inside the model space captured through the gaze of a moving camera inside an empty model building, other model buildings beyond the window, and images of the audience in the huge real space are combined with the spectacle created by the model buildings. It presents the possibility of various perceptions of virtual space and real objects. The intersection of gazes surrounding the models of disappearing buildings in an unfamiliar city experienced as a visitor is also a metaphor for individuals in the city who are buried in countless social relationships.

현대 도시 속에서 일상적으로 응시하고 응시 되어지는 시선의 그물망들은, 보고/보이는 관계가 만들어내는 대도시의 사회적 관계를 가시화한다. 나고야 지역에서 선택된 건축물의 모형작업과 모형 안팎에 설치된 소형비디오 카메라들에 의한 촬영, 그리고 실시간 영사를 통해 보여지는 가상의 공간감은 한국에서 방문한 한 작가의 눈에 비친 나고야라는 낯선 도시와 사람들에 대한 표현이며, 동시에 시선을 통한 나와 다른 남에 대한 관계 맺기의 한 방식이다.

호테이 지역의 없어질 건물들 중 몇 개의 건물들을 선택해 모형으로 제작하였다. 이 건물들은 2차 세계대전 이 후 지어진 2-3층 정도의, 단순한 구조의 창문과 발코니를 가진 주택과 상가건물들이다. 건물모형들은 군집을 이루며 전시장의 바닥에 설치되고, 모형들의 내부와 외부에 다수의 비디오카메라가 설치되어, 모형 공간의 내부와 외부를 찍어, 전시공간의 벽면에 영사되는 화면과 모니터를 통해 관객들에게 보여준다.

 

비어있는 모형건물 속에서 움직이는 카메라의 시선을 통해 찍히는 모형공간 내부의 은밀하고 공허한 공간이미지와 창 너머의 다른 모형건물, 그리고 거대한 모습의 실재 공간 속 관객들의 이미지는, 모형건물들이 만들어내는 스펙터클과 결합되어, 가상공간과 실재대상에 대한 다양한 지각의 가능성을 제시한다. 방문자로서 경험한 낯선 도시의 사라져 가는 건물들의 모형을 둘러싼, 응시하고 응시되어지는 시선의 교차는 무수한 사회적 관계 속에 파묻혀버린 도시 속 개인들에 대한 은유이기도 하다.
