《Strange Visit》

​

Physically, a house is a relatively small space consisting of a square structure, windows, and doors, but for the people living inside the house, it is also a container that contains family history, personal memories, and emotions. The spaces inside ‘Project Space Zip’, a renovated Western-style house located in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam, are an interesting exhibition space containing various traces left behind by the ‘house’, which was a private space. As the private space where a family lived was transformed into an exhibition space where audiences came and went, some parts were roughly torn apart and finished with cement, while other parts still retain traces of the ‘home’ as a secret private space.

Night scene - transparent unfamiliarity

 

Models of brightly lit convenience stores, clothing stores, and buildings were installed in the dark exhibition hall. And small video cameras are installed inside and outside the architectural model. The camera is fixed or slowly rotates to capture the interior of the model space, another model across the window, and the audience in the exhibition space. Through the bright interior and transparent glass walls, the audience can see the interior of the model and the cameras moving within it, but it becomes difficult for the cameras installed inside to see outside due to the difference between the bright interior and the dark exterior space. Rather, the bright interior lighting is reflected on the glass wall, and the interior space and the camera itself are reflected and captured. However, if there is another bright space outside the glass wall, the camera can see another space filled with light beyond the glass wall where the indoor lights are reflected.

Architectural models in a dark space reflect the illuminated light on each other, distorting the sense of real space. As this reflection repeats, it becomes confusing as to which space the light seen through the glass wall is actually located in. The difference in light inside and outside the space and the blocking of the line of sight through the reflection effect of the glass wall create a different effect and atmosphere than an interior made up of closed walls.

The audience of ‘Project Space Zip’ is exposed to images captured by a video camera installed inside the architectural model. And in a dark exhibition space, he finds himself in an unfamiliar scene of a brightly lit transparent model space and in a video.

Through the closedness of the model space and the gaze of the camera that communicates the inside of the closed space to the outside, we aim to express the tension at the point where the extremely personal area symbolized by ‘home’ meets others in the social area. An unfamiliar visit has already begun from the moment the audience steps into Project Space House.

집은 물리적으로는 사각의 구조물과 창문, 문으로 구성된 상대적으로 작은 규모의 공간이지만, 그 집의 내부에서 살아가는 사람들에게는 가족의 역사, 개인의 기억들과 감정들이 담기는 그릇이기도 하다. 강남의 신사동에 위치한 양옥집을 개조해 만든 ‘프로젝트 스페이스 집’ 내부의 공간들은 사적인 공간이었던 ‘집’이 남긴 다양한 흔적들이 담겨 있는 재미있는 전시공간이다. 한 가족이 거주하던 사적인 공간이 관객들이 드나드는 전시공간으로 바뀌면서 어떤 부분은 거칠게 뜯겨져 나가고, 시멘트로 마무리되어지기도 하고, 또 다른 부분은 은밀한 사적인 공간으로서의 ‘집’의 흔적이 고스란히 남아있다.

 

夜景 - 투명한 낯설음

 

어두운 전시장 안에 불이 환하게 켜진 편의점과, 의류상가, 빌딩을 모델로 만들어 설치했다. 그리고 건축 모델의 내부와 외부에는 소형 비디오카메라들이 설치되어 있다. 카메라는 고정되거나, 서서히 회전하며 모델공간의 내부와 창문 건너편의 또 다른 모델, 그리고 전시공간 속의 관객들을 찍는다. 밝은 내부와 투명한 유리 벽을 통해 관객들은 모델의 내부와 그 안에서 움직이는 카메라들을 들여다 볼 수 있지만, 내부에 설치된 카메라들은 밝은 내부와 어두운 바깥공간과의 차이 때문에 밖을 보기 힘들어진다. 오히려 내부의 밝은 조명이 유리 벽에 반사되어, 내부공간의 모습과 카메라 스스로의 모습이 반사되어 찍힌다. 하지만 유리 벽 바깥에 또 다른 밝은 공간이 있다면 카메라는 실내의 조명이 반사되는 유리 벽 너머 또 다른 빛으로 가득한 공간을 볼 수 있다.

 

어두운 공간 속의 건축모델들은 빛이 밝혀진 서로를 반사시키며 실재의 공간감을 왜곡시킨다. 이런 반사가 반복되다 보면 유리 벽을 통해 보이는 빛이 도대체 어느 공간에 위치한 실제 빛인지 혼란스러워진다. 공간 안과 밖의 빛의 차이와 유리 벽의 반사효과를 통한 시선의 차단은 막힌 벽들로 이루어진 실내와는 다른 효과와 분위기를 만들어낸다.

 

낯선 방문

 

‘프로젝트 스페이스 집’의 관객들은 건축모델의 내부에 설치된 비디오 카메라가 찍는 영상을 접하게 된다. 그리고 어두운 전시공간 속에서 환하게 밝혀진 투명한 모델 공간의 낯선 풍경과, 영상 속에 위치한 스스로를 발견한다.

모델 공간의 폐쇄성과, 폐쇄된 공간 내부를 밖으로 소통시키는 카메라의 시선을 통해 ‘집’으로 상징되는 지극히 개인적인 영역이 사회적인 영역 속의 타인과 만나는 지점의 긴장감을 표현하고자 한다. 낯선 방문은 관객들이 프로젝트 스페이스 집에 발을 들여놓는 순간부터 이미 시작되었다.
