ZKM is an abbreviation for Center for Arts and Media Technology (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie), and is a central center for media arts not only in Germany but also around the world. It was founded in Karlsruhe, a city famous for informatics, in Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany, in 1992. It is an institution established in It is equipped with three art galleries, two research institutes, two performance halls, one media reading room, and a library.

When you enter the entrance of ZKM, which is a renovated 350m long old factory building, there is an exhibition hall where special exhibitions are held on the left, and the Media Theater (Medientheater) is located on the right with the Cafeteria in between. When you go up the stairs in the entrance hall, which has a glass roof with a 4-story high ceiling, you will find the Medien Museum, a permanent media art exhibition hall, on your left, and Mediathek, a library and video reading room, is located inside the glass wall on your right. There is a bookstore and souvenir shop at 10 o'clock from the entrance, and if you go up the stairs at 7 o'clock, you can go to Cubus, where modern and electronic music performances are always held. The remaining inconspicuous spaces hide research institutes such as the state-of-the-art imaging and acoustic laboratories, Vortragssaal, where lectures are held, offices, and computer and machine rooms.

This is only a quarter of the entire building. On the southern side of the building is the Städtische Galerie for classical art, on the northern side is the Museum für Neue Kunst for new art of the 20th century, and between them is the Karlsruhe School of Design (HfG), an educational institution. ) is in place. Philosophy is also reflected in this seating arrangement, and viewers can get a glimpse of various aspects of classical art, the results of new experiments in the 20th century, and cutting-edge media art currently in progress, all in one place, as well as a nest of prospective artists for the future. We have created a system where not only visitors, but also artists and students on site can immediately communicate and cooperate with each other, which ultimately means that this center is not a traditional stuffed art museum, but is constantly interacting with the public, students, artists, and the world. It shows that they have a system that can breathe.

This is what the late art historian Heinrich Klotz, the first director of ZKM and the first president of HfG, said, "Classical art and new media art are not independent of each other, but can have their own meaning in a mutual relationship, and in a parallel relationship between the two. This is consistent with the saying, “You can find the art of the future.” To date, ZKM's main research and activity direction is interactive art and net art. This is a consistent direction that can be read when looking at the numerous works of audience participation in the permanent exhibition hall as well as in large-scale special exhibitions. Meanwhile, numerous invited lectures and presentations are organically connecting various experiments and theories here.

Many media artists from around the world, including Europe, have participated in projects at this laboratory, and the Internationale Medien Kunst Preis is held every fall to discover and disseminate new artists and themes. The current director is Peter Weibel, a media art writer and theorist, and Jeffrey Shaw, the head of the 'New Moving Image Research Institute' from Australia, is also engaged in many external activities. As of 2000, the annual budget is approximately 210 billion won, half of which is borne by the city of Karlsruhe.

ZKM은 예술과 미디어 테크놀러지 센터(Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie)의 줄인말이며, 독일 뿐아니라 전세계 미디어 아트의 중심 센터로 1992년 독일 남서부 바덴뷔르템베르크 주에 있는 정보학으로 유명한 도시 칼스루에(Karlsruhe)에 설립된 기관이다. 이곳에는 3개의 미술관과 2개의 연구소, 2개의 공연장, 그리고 1개의 미디어 열람실 및 도서관이 갖추어져 있다. 

 

길이 350m에 이르는 거대한 옛 공장 건물을 개조해 만든 ZKM의 현관 입구를 들어서면 왼편으로 기획전이 열리는 전시장이 있고, 오른 쪽으로는 Cafeteria를 사이에 두고 미디어 극장(Medientheater)이 자리 잡고 있다. 4층 높이 천장의 유리지붕까지 뚫려 있는 현관 안에서 계단을 오르면, 왼쪽에 미디어 아트 상설 전시장인 Medien Museum이 있고 그 오른 편으로는 도서관이자 비디오 열람실인 Mediathek이 유리 벽 안에 위치하고 있다. 현관에서 10시 방향으로는 서점과 기념품 매장이 있고, 7시 방향의 계단을 올라 건너가면 현대음악과 전자음악 공연이 늘 열리는 Cubus로 갈 수 있다. 나머지 눈에 띄지 않는 공간들에는 첨단 영상 연구소와 음향 연구소 등 연구 기관과 강연회가 열리는 Vortragssaal, 사무실들, 컴퓨터와 기계실들이 숨어 있다.

여기까지는 전체 건물의 4분에 1에 불과하다. 전체 건물의 남쪽편에는 고전적인 미술을 위한 시립 미술관(Städtische Galerie)이 들어서 있고, 북쪽 편에는 20세기 새로운 미술을 위한 Museum für Neue Kunst 미술관이 있으며, 그 사이에 교육기관인 칼스루에 조형대학(HfG)이 자리를 잡고 있다. 이러한 자리 배치에도 철학이 담겨 있는데, 관람자들은 한 장소에서 고전적인 미술부터 20세기 새로운 실험들의 결과와 현재 진행되고 있는 첨단 미디어 아트의 다양한 면들과, 또한 미래에 나올 예비작가들의 둥지까지 엿볼 수 있다. 관람객 뿐 아니라 현장에 있는 작가나 학생들도 즉시 상호 소통하고 협조할 수 있는 시스템을 만들어 놓았는데, 이것은 결국 이 센터가 기존의 박제된 미술관 형식이 아니라 지속적으로 대중과 학생, 작가들, 그리고 세계와 동시에 호흡할 수 있는 체제를 갖추었음을 보여주고 있다.

이것은 ZKM의 초대 관장이자 HfG의 초대 총장이었던 미술사학자 고(故)Heinrich Klotz가 "고전적인 미술과 새로운 미디어 아트는 서로 독립된 것이 아니라 상호 관계 속에서 제 의미를 갖을 수 있으며, 둘의 평행한 관계 속에서 미래의 예술을 찾을 수 있다"고 한 말과 일맥 상통한다. 현재까지 ZKM의 주된 연구와 활동 방향은 인터액티브 아트와 넷 아트 쪽이다. 이는 상설 전시장에 있는 수 많은 관객 참여 작품들을 볼 때에도, 또 규모가 큰 기획전에서도 읽을 수 있는 일관된 방향이다. 그 사이 사이에 수 많은 초청 강연과 발표회들은 이곳의 다양한 실험과 이론들을 유기적으로 연결시키고 있다.

유럽을 비롯한 전 세계의 많은 미디어 아트 작가들이 이곳의 연구실에서 프로젝트에 참여하고 갔으며, 매년 가을 Internationale Medien Kunst Preis를 개최해서 새로운 작가와 주제 의식들을 발굴하고 보급시키고 있다. 현재 관장은 미디어 아트 작가이자 이론가인 Peter Weibel이 맡고 있으며, 실무적으로는 호주 출신의 '새로운 영상 연구소'장인 Jeffrey Shaw도 많은 대외 활동을 하고 있다. 2000년 기준으로 1년 예산은 한화로 대략 2100억원 정도이며, 이중 절반은 칼스루에 시에서 부담하고 있다.
