《Illusion》

Jungju Jeong’s solo exhibition ‘Illusion’, held as part of the ‘Today’s Artist’ exhibition at the Kim Jong-young Museum of Art, looks at the various conflicts between individuals and groups, or between individuals and others, as metaphors in architectural space.

'City of Gaze', an installation work placed on the innermost lower floor, is a collection of three Asian cities (Nagoya and Shanghai) covered through the 'City of Gaze' exhibition, a solo exhibition project held at Nagoya in 2007, Shanghai in 2008, and Gallery Chosun in Seoul in 2010. , Seoul), this work models buildings that have disappeared or will disappear due to redevelopment. Video cameras of various movements are installed inside and between the models. The video camera looks out from the inside of the model building, showing the inside of the model space, other models outside the window, the audience watching the work, and the strong searchlight light from the rotating UFO building in the center coming through the window. Movements passing through the space and changes in the space due to camera movement are captured and projected on the exhibition hall wall in real time.

The ‘villa’ installed on the middle floor is a 4-story villa model made of tin plate and measuring 400x190x50cm. This villa was created as a model of an actual military apartment located along the Susaek Road from Seoul to Ilsan. The villa is located along the Susaek Road and faces the Susaek Road at an angle. It felt like a defensive position disguised as a military apartment, with a unique apartment structure with sturdy railings and many passageways. The modeled villa creates a strong and raw surface due to the texture of the tin plate. One small monitor is installed inside each of the 24 independent spaces. On this monitor, interviews and performance videos are shown where each person talks about their wounds and reacts to these wounds. The villa installed in a dark space focuses attention with the flickering of monitor light leaking from each room and the whisper-like interview sounds. Viewers looking inside the space can watch individuals talk about their own wounds and react to them.

In the middle of the low-ceilinged room on the top floor, the ‘Metaphysical Star’ work, which consists of three buildings made of aluminum inserted into each other, hangs from the ceiling at eye level. A long straight building, a curved building, and three curved buildings are intertwined and intertwined, and at some points appear to be in the shape of a star. The physical structure of a building that is deformed or irrationally inserted into each other is a metaphor for the incomplete psychology of an individual.

 

 

The physical form made up of material texture, shape, and structure has the image of a building, but also serves as a metaphor for the body in the work. And the light that illuminates the interior of a physical model building, or the camera's gaze, is a metaphor for the spirit and psychology embedded in the body. Fluid and incomplete mental states such as anxiety, wounds, fear and curiosity about the outside world were transformed into illusions lacking continuity, such as dreams or mirages, through architectural models, cameras, and lighting presented in various forms.

《환영》

김종영 미술관의 ‘오늘의 작가’ 전으로 열리는 정정주 개인전 ‘환영Illusion’ 은 건축 공간에 은유 된 개인과 집단, 혹은 개인과 타자 간의 다양한 충돌을 조망하고 있습니다.

 

가장 안쪽 아래층에 놓인 설치 작품인 ‘응시의 도시’ 는 2007년 나고야와 2008년 상하이, 그리고 2010년 서울 갤러리 조선에서 진행된 개인전 프로젝트인 '응시의 도시' 전을 통해 다루어진 아시아 세 도시(나고야, 상하이, 서울) 에서, 재개발에 의해 사라지거나 사라질 건물들을 모형화한 작업입니다. 모형들의 내부와 사이 사이에 다양한 움직임의 비디오 카메라가 설치됩니다. 비디오 카메라는 모형 건물의 내부에서 외부를 응시하며, 모형공간의 내부와, 창 밖의 다른 모형들, 작품을 관람하는 관객들, 중앙에 놓여진 회전하는 UFO 빌딩에서 비추는 강한 서치라이트 불빛이 창문을 통해 들어와 공간을 훑고 지나가는 움직임, 그리고 카메라의 움직임에 의한 공간의 변화를 찍어 전시장 벽면에 실시간으로 영사합니다.

  

중간층에 설치되는 ‘빌라’는 함석판으로 제작된 400x190x50cm 크기의 4층 빌라 모형입니다. 이 빌라는 실재 서울에서 일산으로 향하는 수색로 변에 위치한 군인아파트를 모형으로 제작되었습니다. 빌라는 수색로 변에 위치하며, 비스듬히 수색로를 향해 있습니다. 이 모습은 견고한 난간과 많은 통로를 가진 독특한 아파트 구조와 함께 군인아파트를 위장한 방어진지의 모습처럼 느껴졌습니다. 모형화된 빌라는 함석판이 가진 질감 때문에 강하고 생경한 표면을 만들어내고 있습니다. 24개의 독립된 공간 내부에는 각각 하나씩의 소형 모니터가 설치되어 있습니다. 이 모니터에서는 한 사람씩 자신의 상처에 대해 이야기하고 이 상처에 반응하는 인터뷰와 퍼포먼스 영상이 상영됩니다. 어두운 공간에 설치된 빌라는 각 방에서 새어 나오는 모니터 빛의 어른거림과 소근거리는 듯한 인터뷰 소리들로 관심을 집중시킵니다. 공간 내부를 들여다보는 관객들은 스스로의 상처에 대해 이야기하며, 그것들에 반응하는 개인의 모습을 지켜볼 수 있습니다.

 

맨 위층의 낮은 천정이 있는 방의 중간에는 알루미늄으로 만들어진 세 개의 건물이 서로 삽입되어 있는 ‘Metaphysical Star’ 작품이 시선 높이 정도에 천정으로부터 매달려 있습니다. 긴 직선 형태를 가진 건물과, 꺾여 있는 건물, 그리고 곡선으로 휘어있는 세 개의 건물들은 서로 삽입되어 엉켜있기도 하고, 어떤 시점에서는 별의 형태로 보이기도 합니다. 건축물의 구조가 변형되거나 서로 불합리하게 삽입되는 물리적인 구조는 불완전한 개인의 심리가 은유 되어 있습니다.

 

재료의 질감, 형태, 구조로 이루어진 물리적인 형태는 건축물의 이미지를 가지고 있지만, 작품 속에서 신체를 은유하고 있습니다. 그리고 물리적인 모형 건축물의 내부를 밝히는 빛, 혹은 카메라의 시선은 신체에 깃들인 정신, 심리를 은유 합니다. 불안함과 상처, 외부에 대한 두려움과 호기심과 같은 유동적이고 불완전한 정신적인 상태들은 다양한 형식으로 제시된 건축 모형들과 카메라, 조명에 의해 꿈이나, 신기루와 같은 연속성이 결여된 환영Illusion으로 전이되었습니다.
