In Gwangju Uprising as experienced during his fifth year of elementary school, the memories of May 18 serve as both a significant motif and the driving force behind Jeong Jeongju's artistic practice. Jeong Jeongju's perspective on the May 18 Democratic Uprising differs from smooth and neatly organized historical narratives. The memories of May 18 that he expresses are neither unified, totalizing, nor definitive. The Gwangju of his memory, together with the uprising itself, appeared white and radiant, yet all the more chaotic and eerie because of it. This stems from the gap between the sensory experiences of a ten-year-old boy and official historical accounts. Fragmented memories of reality-cars and buses left disorderly in empty streets, or picking up propaganda leaflets falling from the sky to use as notebook paper-made the uprising feel vividly tangible, almost physically present. For this exhibition, the artist visited the abandoned Citizens' Apartments in Gwangcheon-dong, a site deeply connected to Gwangju Uprising. Within these ruined spaces, traces from the 1980s to the present remain embedded. Mold-covered and torn wallpaper, linoleum flooring, and shattered windows are transformed into colors and patterns within the video work, radiating the aura of anxiety and excitement remembered from childhood experiences. The ‘Deulbul Yahak,’ which began in Gwangju in 1978, was a people’s educational community where workers, students, and intellectuals learned and taught together, awakening to the realities of the times. The practical spirit of ‘teaching and teaching’ became a crucial ideological foundation leading to the May 18 Democratization Movement and continues to resonate deeply to this day. This exhibition sheds light on the memories and spirit of the Deulbul Yahak through diverse artistic languages, including painting, media installation, literature, photography, video, and archives. In particular, by combining oral interviews with citizens who remember that era with archival materials from the Deulbul Martyrs Memorial Society and the May 18 Democratization Movement Archives, the exhibition expands historical memory into a more sensory and multi-dimensional experience.

정정주의 작업 속에서 초등학교 5학년때 경험한 광주 5.18의 기억은 중요한 모티브이자 작업을 진행하는 원동력이다. 5.18 민주항쟁을 다루는 정정주의 시각은 매끄럽고 정리된 역사와는 차이가 있다. 작가가 표현하고 있는 5.18의 기억은 통합적이지도, 총체적이지도, 규정적이지도 않다. 정정주가 기억하는 고향 광주와 5.18 민주항쟁은 희고 빛이 나, 더욱 혼란스럽고 섬뜩하였다. 이는 10살 남짓 소년의 감각 경험과 공식 역사와의 간극 때문이다. 텅 빈 거리에 무질서하게 멈춰진 자동차, 버스, 그리고 하늘에서 내리는 삐라를 주워 연습장으로 삼았던 파편화된 실제의 기억은 5.18 항쟁을 되려 피부에 와 닿을 정도로 생생히 지각하게 하였다. 긴박한 사건 발생을 직감하는 불안과 동시에 축제의 설렘과도 같았다던 그날의 감각은 역사적 사실과 충돌하면서 우리의 '앎'을 전복시키고, 더욱더 낯설고 혼란스러운 것으로 바꾸어 버린다. 이번 전시에서 5.18의 뿌리가 있는 광천동 시민아파트를 답사하며 80년대부터 최근까지의 흔적이 담긴 폐허의 장소들에서 마주한 곰팡이 피고 뜯겨진 벽지, 장판, 깨진 유리창은 영상 속 색과 패턴으로 환원되며 어린시절 경험한 불안과 설렘의 아우라를 발산한다. 미술사가 이상윤(Ph.D)

1978년 광주에서 시작된 ‘들불야학’은 노동자·학생·지식인이 함께 배우고 가르치며 시대를 자각해 나갔던 민중 교육 공동체입니다. ‘강학-학강’의 실천 정신은 이후 5·18 민주화운동으로 이어지는 중요한 사상적 기반이 되었으며, 오늘날까지도 깊은 울림을 남기고 있습니다. 이번 전시는 회화, 미디어설치, 문학, 사진, 영상, 아카이브 등 다양한 예술 언어를 통해 들불야학의 기억과 정신을 조명합니다. 특히 당시를 기억하는 시민들의 구술 인터뷰와 들불열사기념사업회 및 5·18민주화운동기록관의 아카이브 자료를 함께 구성하여, 역사적 기억을 보다 감각적이고 입체적인 경험으로 확장하였습니다.
