The media art exchange exhibition ‘From Light 8637’, the result of international exchange between Gwangyang-si, Jeollanam-do and Linz, Austria, has come to a spectacular close. According to Gwangyang City on the 4th, the Gwangyang-Linz media art exchange exhibition '8637 from Light' will be held at Gwangyang City Hall and the city from the 2nd to the 10th. The number '8637' refers to the distance between Gwangyang City and Linz City, 8637km.

First, the opening ceremony, which featured spectacular lights, video, and music, was held at Gwangyang City Hall on the night of the 2nd. In attendance were Gwangyang Mayor Jeong In-hwa, Ars Electronica Center Overseas Director Laura Welzenbach, domestic and foreign writers such as Susi Gutsche, National Assembly member Kwon Hyang-yeop, Jeollanam-do Provincial Council Chairman Kim Tae-gyun, Gwangyang City Council Chairman Choi Dae-won, and citizens.

The opening ceremony began with a pre-ceremony performance by the Gwangyang City Choir, and an opening performance with the theme of 'Shooting Light' decorated the front of the city hall and the square in front of the building in early fall. The performance of 'Daejeongchangui' by the City Traditional Korean Orchestra harmonized with the performance of 'Arirang' by the City Choir. A unique artistic performance combining tradition and modernity was held. The opening performance was the work 'From Gwangyang to Linz, In Search of Light' using media façades, and the highlight of the opening ceremony was the media façade show by artists Chang-gyeom Kim and Lee Nam-m that caught the eye.

‘Spring Feast’ and ‘Gwangyang Linz Landscape Painting’, which were staged using the city hall’s outer wall as a canvas, created an ecstasy through the beautiful combination of light, video, and sound. Musical singer Ji-in Yoon presented the best stage with her beautiful and powerful voice for the visiting group and event attendees from Linz City, and the Daegeum performance with the Mukjukdo media art video in the background decorated the autumn night. Gwangyang City Boys and Girls Choir and Gwangyang City Creative Korean Traditional Music Orchestra took the final order of the performance and performed the finale with Ji-in Yoon.

Gwangyang Mayor Jeong In-hwa said, “Holding the media art exchange exhibition has laid the foundation for fostering the culture and arts industry,” and added, “Gwangyang City will do its best to develop into a sustainable global culture and arts city that opens the future of Korea’s media arts.”

An exhibition official said, "Through the exchange exhibition, we are screening various media art works by using the Gwangyang Art Warehouse in Gwangyang-eup, Yedam Warehouse, Inseo-ri Park Bandage, Guru Coffee Roasters, and Seoul National University's Nambu Yeonseollim Pavilion as exhibition spaces."

전남 광양시와 오스트리아 린츠시의 국제 교류 성과물인 미디어아트 교류전 '빛으로부터 8637'의 화려한 막이 올랐다. 4일 광양시에 따르면 광양-린츠 미디어아트 교류전 '빛으로부터 8637'이 2일부터 10일까지 광양시청과 시 일원에서 펼쳐진다. 숫자 '8637'은 광양시와 린츠시 사이의 거리 8637㎞를 의미한다.

우선 화려한 빛과 영상, 음악을 더한 개막식은 2일 밤 광양시청에서 열렸다. 정인화 광양시장, 로라 웰젠바흐(Laura Welzenbach) 아르스일렉트로니카 센터 해외책임자, 수시 구츠케(Susi Gutsche) 등 국내외 작가, 권향엽 국회의원, 김태균 전라남도의회 의장, 최대원 광양시의회 의장, 시민 등이 참석했다.

개막식은 광양시립합창단의 식전 공연을 시작으로 '빛을 쏘다' 주제의 오프닝 퍼포먼스가 초가을 시청사 전면과 청사앞 광장을 수놓았다.시립국악관현악단의 '대정창의' 연주가 시립합창단의 '아리랑' 공연과 어우러지며 전통과 현대를 결합한 독특한 예술공연이 펼쳐졌다. 개막 퍼포먼스는 미디어파사드를 활용한 '광양에서 린츠까지, 빛을 찾아서' 작품이 상영됐으며, 개막식의 하이라이트로 김창겸·이이남 작가의 미디어파사드쇼가 시선을 사로잡았다.

 

시청 외벽을 캔버스로 삼아 상연된 ‘봄의 향연’, ‘광양 린츠 산수도’는 빛, 영상, 소리가 아름답게 어우러져 황홀경을 연출했다. 뮤지컬 가수 윤지인은 린츠시에서 온 방문단과 행사 참석자들을 위해 아름답고 힘 있는 목소리로 최고의 무대를 선사했으며, 묵죽도 미디어아트 영상을 배경으로 한 대금연주가 가을밤을 장식했다. 광양시 소년소녀 합창단과 광양시립창작국악관현악단은 공연의 마지막 순서를 맡아 윤지인과 함께 피날레 공연을 펼쳤다.

정인화 광양시장은 "미디어아트 교류전 개최는 문화예술산업 육성을 위한 초석을 마련한 것"이라며 "광양시가 대한민국 미디어아트의 미래를 열어가는 지속 가능한 글로벌 문화예술 도시로 발돋움하기 위해 최선을 다하겠다"고 말했다.

전시 관계자는 "교류전을 통해 광양읍 광양예술창고, 예담창고, 인서리공원 반창고, 구루커피 로스터스, 서울대학교 남부연습림관사를 전시 공간으로 활용해 다양한 미디어아트 작품들을 상영하고 있다"고 말했다.
