Breath for the Future, The Aurora of Mudeungsan

The 2025 International May Special Exhibition, Breath for the Future, The Aurora of Mudeungsan, commemorates the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising by presenting a collaborative showcase of artists from Korea and Canada.

This exhibition brings together the works of Canadian Inuit artists from Kinngait (West Baffin Cooperative)—Qavavau Manumie, Ningeosiaq Ashoona, and Saimaiyu Akesuk—alongside Korean artists Lee Maelee and Jeong Jeongju. Through the shared themes of light, memory, daily life, and mourning, the exhibition offers poetic visual propositions for the future.

Beyond the memory of May 1980 in Gwangju, this exhibition seeks to extend a message to future generations—one that reflects on the scars and remembrance of humanity. May it become a space where artistic expressions breathe through time, carrying forward the weight of history while illuminating paths ahead.

이번 2025년 국제오월특별전시회 <미래의 숨결, 무등의 오로라>는 5.18 광주민주화운동 45주년을 기념하여 '한국-캐나다' 예술가들의 작업을 함께 선보입니다.

캐나다 킨가이트 이누이트(웨스트 바핀 코어퍼레이티브) 작가 카버바우 매뉴미 Qavavau Manumie, 닝게오시악 애슈나Ningeosiaq Ashoona, 새마이유 아커석 Saimaiyu Akesuk작가들과 한국 이매리 Lee Maelee, 정정주 Jeong Jeongju작가는 '빛-기억-일상-애도'를 주제로 미래를 향한 예술적 제언을 시각 이미지로 구현하였습니다.

1980년 광주 오월을 넘어 인류의 상흔과 기억에 대해 다음 세대를 위한 메시지로 전달하는 시간이 되었으면 합니다.
