Series <Scenery that occurs> 2017-2024
When I drive a car and quickly cross a dark space, I see houses and streetlights dotting the dark night landscape. As I look at the lights in the darkness, I gradually imagine the distance between each light and me. Then I imagine the shape of the space. If there is a particularly dark space, I create a careful image of that space. After a while, a landscape is drawn in my head that combines several clues in the darkness.
The <Emerging Landscape> series is a spatiotemporal expression of the boundaries I encounter in my daily life. Encountering the sharp conflict of a divided country on a daily basis and encountering spaces that will disappear for reconstruction and redevelopment brings about a clear disconnection and illusion in the flowing daily life. The images of repeated intersections created by the countless appearances and disappearances of the images in my memories that float around in my head are expressed as floating, colliding, and overlapping star-shaped sculptural images and gazes.
자동차를 타고 어두운 공간을 빠르게 가로지르다 보면 어두운 밤 풍경 속에서 점점이 있는 집이나 가로등 불빛들이 지나간다. 어두움 속 빛들을 보며 서서히 각 빛들과 나와의 거리를 연상해 보게 된다. 그리고 공간의 모습을 떠올린다. 또 특별히 어두운 공간이 있다면 그 공간에 대해 조심스러운 이미지를 만들어본다. 잠시 후 내 머리 속에서는 어두움 속의 몇 가지 단서들이 조합된 풍경이 그려진다.
<발생하는 풍경> 시리즈는 내가 일상에서 마주하는 경계들에 대하는 시공간적 표현이다. 분단된 국가의 첨예한 대립을 일상적으로 마주하고 재건축, 재개발을 위해 사라질 공간을 접하는 것은 흐르는 일상 속에 분명한 단절과 환영을 불러킨다. 내 머리속을 떠도는 기억속의 이미지들이 수없이 나타나고 사라지기를 반복하며 만들어내는 반복되는 교차의 이미지는 부유하고 충돌하며 생성되는 별 형태의 조형 이미지와 시선의 중첩으로 표현된다.

I have to drive one hour along the armistice line overlooked by North Korea to get to the studio. The barbed wire along the road, the huge river beyond the barbed wire, and the landscapes of North Korea remind me of the huge border that penetrates my daily life. And these scenes overlap with the ruined and disappearing houses encountered in the huge redevelopment districts that are passing by to bring my daughter to school and the new landscape that results. Destruction and new Appear occur constantly in urban redevelopment and at enormous boundaries no one can cross.
3채널 비디오 작품인 [발생하는 풍경]은 작업실을 가기 위해 북한이 건너다 보이는 휴전선을 따라 달리는 길을 따라 이어지는 철조망과 철조망 너머의 거대한 강, 그리고 북한 풍경을 보여준다. 길을 따라 이어지는 철조망과 철조망 너머의 거대한 강, 그리고 북한 풍경들은 내 일상 깊이 침투해 있는 거대한 경계를 떠오르게 한다. 그리고 이 장면들은 큰아이를 학교에 데려다 주기 위해 지나치는 거대한 재개발지구에서 마주치는 부셔지고 사라져가는 집들과 이로 인해 새롭게 등장하는 풍경과 오버랩 된다.

Four architectural models created as works over the past 10 years are partially dismantled, reassembled, and combined into four axes. The four architectural models are part of the Hadden Museum of Art in Ganghwa Island, the former Jeonnam Provincial Office and Gwangju Armed Forces Hospital, which dealt with sensory memories of the Gwangju Uprising, and the former US military officers’ quarters located within the DMZ. Likewise, videos taken by three cameras installed inside the architectural models are projected from three projectors installed inside. The videos, which are reflected on the metal surface inside the model and scattered like fragments throughout the exhibition hall, turn into an afterimage of light. Personal memories, social memories, and memories of places permeate the exhibition space like traces of light of unknown origin permeating the night.
지난 10년간 작품으로 제작됐던 네 개의 건축 모형이 부분적으로 해체되고 재조합되어 네 개의 축으로 결합된다. 네 개의 건축모형은 광주항쟁에 대한 감각기억을 다뤘던 구 전남도청과 국군광주병원, DMZ 내에 위치한 구 미군장교 숙소, 강화도 해든미술관의
부분이다. 건축 모형 내부에 설치된 세 대의 카메라가 찍은 영상은 마찬가지로 내부에 설치된 세 대의 프로젝터에서 투사된다. 영상은 모형 내부의 금속 표면에 반사돼 전시장 곳곳에 파편처럼 뿌려지며, 빛의 잔상으로 바뀐다. 개인의 기억과 사회적 기억, 장소의 기억은 출처를 알 수 없는 빛의 흔적처럼 전시 공간을 스며든다.

Illuminary (2023) is a work that conveys the process and meaning of a major remodeling project planned by the Busan Museum of Art. This represents the separation of the building's 25 year history and the model of the newly transformed building that will contain the nest 25 years. In this work, the facades of the skyscrapers that populate the waterfront ard sandwiched between two building models, as if floating in a building exhibition space. Images of the building's interior are also projected in real-time on the exhibition walls, combining images of the museum building and Haeundae skyscrapers to create a nes urban illusion. Jeong presentation of the "collision of old and new spaces" symbolizes the placeness of the museum, which connectes its past, present, and future.
<Illuminay(2023)>는 부산시립미술관이 계획하고 있는 대대적인 리모델링의 과정과 의미를 담고 있다. 25년의 역사를 가진 건물과 새로운 25년을 담게 될 변화된 건물의 모형이 분리되는 모습을 표현하고 잇다. 마치 건물 전시 공간을 부유하듯 해운대를 채우고 있는 마천루 건물의 파사드들이 두 개의 건물 모형 곳곳에 끼어있다. 또 이 건축물의 내부 이미지는 전시장 벽면에 실시간으로 영사되는데, 미술관의 건물과 해운대의 마천루 이미지가 결합되어 새로운 도시환영을 불러일으킨다. 정정주가 제시한 '구 공간과 새롭게 바뀐 공간의 충돌'은 부산시립미술관의 과거와 현재, 미래를 잇는 부산시립미술관의 장소성을 상징한다.

It evoked the shadow of history remaining in the empty building through a model reproduced with Styrfoam and corrugated paper of the officer’s quarters used by the U.S soldiers in actual Camp Greaves. Real-time images taken by a small camera in the model are projected onto the wall by seven projectors, while moving images are reflected back by the mirror. Images become visions floating on the real world like fragments of memory. Viewers captured by cameras will be involved in a space that remains only in memory of the past.
캠프그리브스는 파주 DMZ지역 안에 위치한 미군기지였고 현재는 접경지 관광을 위한 호스텔로 이용되고 있다. 미군은 DMZ를 떠나 이동했지만 전쟁의 불안과 분단의 상철는 여전에 DMZ에 머무르며 버려지고 폐허가 되어가는 미군기지의 모습과 같이 우리에게 상처의 깊이를 가늠하게 한다. 캠프그리브스의 텅 빈 장교숙소에 남아 있는 역사의 그림자를 환기시킨다. 숙소를 재현한 모형 안에서 찍은 실시간 영상이 벽에 투사되고, 움직이는 거울에 의해 다시 반사된다. 영상들은 기억의 파편처럼 현실위를 떠도는 환영이 된다.
